District and County Councils give considerable support to their Councillors. By way of example, the following explanation of the support available is extracted from the Cambridgeshire County Council website. District Councils in Cambridgeshire offer similar support.


What help will I get to handle post, etc?

  • Councillors are provided with support for official correspondence, photocopying, etc. Workrooms are provided at with telephone, dictation and computer facilities. All Councillors are connected to the Council’s e-mail network and are provided with a personal/laptop computer.


What initial help will be given?

  • There will be a carefully planned induction programme on the Council’s services, its priorities and challenges. Detailed advice about sources of information and how they can be accessed will be provided, together with training on the use of computer equipment.


How will I get information to answer questions about the Council?

  • A comprehensive list of contacts will be given to you and senior officers will always be ready to help you find the information you need.
