The following explanation of the duties of a County Councillor is extracted from the Cambridgeshire County Council website.

How much of my time will it take?

  • It will depend on the extent of your involvement, your political activities, and how far you want to be involved in particular issues. The minimum is likely to be equivalent to two days per week. However, the leading Councillors spend much more time than this.

Can I afford it?

  • All Councillors currently receive an annual basic allowance of £6480 plus travelling and subsistence expenses. Those with special responsibilities such as Cabinet members and opposition leaders receive additional allowances.

Can I get time off from work?

  • Most employers are prepared, within reason, to grant some time off for Council work. You should discuss this with your employer before making the commitment.

Do I have to be a member of a political group and, if so, how do political groups work?

  • Councillors need not be identified with a political group, although in practice most are. The political groups provide the opportunity for the informal discussion of issues outside the formal structure and can help to develop consistent lines of thought in the key policy areas.

What help will I get to handle post, etc?

  • Councillors are provided with support for official correspondence, photocopying, etc. Workrooms are provided at Shire Hall with telephone, dictation and computer facilities. All Councillors are connected to the Council’s e-mail network and are provided with a personal/laptop computer.

What initial help will be given?

  • There will be a carefully planned induction programme on the Council’s services, its priorities and challenges. Detailed advice about sources of information and how they can be accessed will be provided, together with training on the use of computer equipment.

How will I get information to answer questions about the County Council?

  • A comprehensive list of contacts will be given to you and senior officers will always be ready to help you find the information you need.

What other involvement is there?

  • The County Council works in partnership with many other organisations, which provide community services. Councillors are appointed to represent the Council’s view on many of these bodies. Most Councillors also serve as a school governor in their local area.
